The Black Dragons by RedSkittlez-DA The Black Dragons by RedSkittlez-DA
The Black Dragons are one of the Loyalist Space Marine Chapters created during the Cursed 21st Founding; their gene-seed is suspected of having originated with the Salamanders. They were censured by the Inquisition due to the mutation of the Chapter's gene-seed, which causes certain Marines of the Chapter to develop blade-like outgrowths of bone on the head and forearms. Some Black Dragons afflicted in this way sharpened these bone growths and sheathed them in adamantium for use in close melee combat. These Black Dragons are then grouped together into specialist jump-pack-equipped Assault Marine squads known as Dragon Claws within the Chapter.

The Black Dragons are also known for growing very long, poison-tipped fangs. This level of mutation strains the tolerance of the Inquisition and there are many recorded instances of other Space Marines Chapters (notably the Dark Angels and Marines Malevolent) refusing to fight alongside the Black Dragons.

So the ones with blades coming out of their forearms don't necessarily have any coming from their heads?

LOVE these guys! Not only are they cool, but my I love dragons and my favorite chapter is the Salamanders. Been trying to find out more about them, but there isn't much. What's their temperament like, do they try and save the civilians, like their founding chapter?

If I wanted to use Dragon Claws in a game of 40K, would customized Warp Talons be a good representation, mini- and rules-wise?

Or I'll use the rules from the Chapter Approve, published by GW and it has the rules for the black dragons in it.

A very nice picture good sir, I believe that the canon is that the 'claws' extend towards the hand rather than the elbow but personally i think they look cooler like this.
Also, they definitely didnt come from the salamaders, because the salamanders have never raised a subsequent founding chapter.

The mutation doesn't designate weather the claws go forward or backwards but if you own the book called "Chapter Approved" it shows the first appearance of the Black Dragons, their rules and even the models, which show the claws going backwards. Also regarding the Salamanders, in the fluff it states that the Black Dragons are 'SUSPECTED'(which i mentioned in the description) to be descendants from them. Its also mentioned in some Black Library novels.

it was discounted entirely in the tome of fire trilogy by nick kyme, it was the second book i think, firedrake[citation needed]
and on the cover of the recent black library book about them it has the claws facing forwards
and im not trying to sound like a douchebag here, i really like your work

Yeah, I'm telling you that there are different variations of the mutation. It doesn't matter which way it goes, up or down, one could go on their arm, one could grow on their head, its not a precise mutation, its variance.

I hope you don't think I made up this chapter, because I dunno, this chapter has been around since 3nd Ed, GW even praised them. But I notice you forgot how space marines work. Every space marine has a gland called the Progenoid gland, where their gene seed come frome. Every 10 years they harvest it. So if a chapter has 1000 space marines, they get 1000 more potential space marines through the Progenoid gland. The average lifespan of a space marine is 500 years, so you can see how much gene-seed you can get out of one marine.

Let's do this mathematically:

So, 500 years is the average life expectancy for a space marine which we will say for a base line for the equation. This is then divided by the time taken for the Progenoid to mature, which is every ten years, so 50 gene seed extractions are made for each space marine. This is then 1000 new space marines from a single extraction which is now 50,000 new space marines from that 5 century old veteran, Then there are 1000 marines on average for each chapter. This then equals to 5 million successor space marines, per chapter.

However we have to take the possibility of gene seed lost in battle, failed extractions from the marines and corrupted seeds from possible encounters with chaos or unknown activities usually related to the warp. So if we take off 6 to 7 % we have a potential of roughly 4.6 million space marines to be successors.

The reason why we don’t know about all of these successors in particular for the Salamander is for the following reasons:

1. In the 40k universe it is a time of war and the information about the successor chapters may have been lost in battle, not being requested to be brought up by other parts of the imperium or any records were not even reported of the successor marines.

2. Games Workshop does not want to be a restricting thing all the time and wants you to have the opportunities to create and forge your own chapter with its own backstory being one of the many successor chapters created in the first place.

Sadly, the mutants are so fucked across the imperium ._. Imperial Guard is feared of them, adeptus astartes refuses to fight by their side and Inquisition's tolerance is driven to it's very edge.

Har har.
